당신도 편두통을 앓고 계신가요? - Migraine

최근 폭발적인 인기를 자랑하는 NYT 블로그로 'Migraine(편두통)'이 있다. 이 블로그는 제목 그대로 편두통 관련 경험담, 개인 상담, 전문적인 원인추적 등의 다양하고 깊이있는 정보와 이야기들로 구성되어 있다.

재미있는 점은 다양한 분야의 전문가들이 팀블로그로 참여하고 있다는 것. 멤버는 소설가, 기자, 신경학자, 정신과의사, 락밴드 가수 총 5명이며, 이들 모두 편두통을 심하게 앓은 적이 있거나 지금도 편두통과 어떤 형태로든 하루하루를 엮어가고 있는 전문가들이다.

그 중 美 콜럼비아대 신경학/정신의학 교수인 Oliver Sacks는 그의 글 'Patterns'에서 영국작가 Hilary Mantel의 입을 빌어 편두통과 패턴의 상관관계를 인상적으로 소개했다. 장례식을 앞두고 기꺼이 나이듦을 껴안았던 모리처럼, 끔찍했던 어린 시절의 아픔을 하나의 전문영역으로 발전시킨 그들의 노력이 눈부시다.

Hilary Mantel의 회고록 'Giving Up the Ghost'의 한 구절을 소개한다. 글을 읽고 '헉, 나도...' 신음을 뱉어냈다면 당신도 'Migraine'의 편두통 추적여행에 참여할 자격이 있는 일원! 미국에만 이미 2천8백만 편두통 친구들이 있다고 한다. 그리고 나도 예외는 아니다
